The Brod oil refinery in Bosnia and Herzegovina has reported a significant financial downturn, closing 2025 with a deficit exceeding 41 million euros. This marks a substantial increase from the 31.1 million euros loss recorded in 2024, highlighting an ongoing struggle with profitability amid escalating operational costs and a decreasing workforce.

Despite an uptick in revenues, which rose to approximately 26.6 million euros in 2025 from 20.8 million euros the previous year, the refinery’s financial health deteriorated sharply. The surge in income was overshadowed by a rapid rise in operating costs, which escalated to about 66.6 million euros, up from roughly 50.5 million euros in 2024. This disproportionate increase in expenses significantly contributed to the refinery’s deepening financial woes.

The cumulative losses for the Brod refinery have now reached an alarming total of approximately 492.5 million euros. This persistent deficit underscores the challenges faced by the facility, which has struggled to maintain operational viability amidst fluctuating market conditions and rising input costs.

Additionally, the workforce at the refinery has continued its downward trend, with employment figures dropping to 310 workers by the end of 2025—a reduction of nine positions compared to the previous year. This ongoing decline in staffing reflects broader issues within the organization and raises concerns about its ability to sustain operations effectively.

The financial results signal critical implications for the energy sector in Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly regarding the operational efficiency and future viability of local refineries like Brod. As the industry grapples with these challenges, stakeholders will need to consider strategic adjustments to address both cost management and workforce sustainability moving forward.
