In 2025, Albania’s electricity production witnessed a decline, totaling 7,468 GWh, which marks a 4.7% decrease from the previous year’s output of 7,837 GWh. This reduction in overall production is significant as it reflects challenges in the energy sector, particularly concerning hydropower generation.
Despite the drop in production, Albania’s electricity exports saw an upward trend, reaching 2,498 GWh in 2025, up from 2,335 GWh in 2024. Conversely, the country increased its electricity imports to 3,375 GWh, compared to 2,669 GWh the previous year. This shift suggests a growing reliance on imported electricity to meet domestic demand.
The state-owned power utility KESH, which operates the majority of hydropower plants in the country, generated 3,374 GWh in 2025. This figure represents a notable 17.4% decline from 2024. Independent hydropower producers also experienced a reduction in output, generating 3,109 GWh, which is down by 4.2%. In contrast, the contribution from renewable sources such as wind and solar saw remarkable growth, producing a combined total of 984 GWh, reflecting a substantial 94% increase year-on-year.
Total electricity consumption in Albania rose by 3%, reaching 6,752 GWh. This increase indicates a growing demand for electricity within the country. Additionally, losses within the electricity network decreased slightly to 1,593 GWh, representing a 1.3% reduction compared to 2024. The dynamics of production and consumption highlight both challenges and opportunities as Albania navigates its energy landscape amidst fluctuating production levels and increasing reliance on renewable sources.
