Croatia’s electricity production rose 13% year on year to 1,262 GWh in August 2026, according to figures published by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics. Output increased from 1,117 GWh in August 2025. The data show a mix of generation sources contributing to the higher total.

Generation mix in August 2026

Hydropower was the largest source, producing 412 GWh, equivalent to 32.6% of total electricity output. Thermal power plants generated 381 GWh, or 30.2%. Solar installations supplied 220 GWh, accounting for 17.4%.

Wind farms produced 180 GWh, representing 14.3% of electricity generation. Combined, wind and solar contributed 400 GWh. The figures indicate a larger role for these renewables within Croatia’s August supply.

Electricity trade balance and import dependence

Higher domestic generation did not reduce cross-border electricity flows. Croatia imported 1,198 GWh during August, up 8.8% year on year. Electricity exports fell by 4% to 546 GWh.

The net electricity import position widened to approximately 652 GWh, compared with 532 GWh a year earlier. The resulting balance points to continued reliance on regional electricity markets when domestic production does not cover demand.

Croatia’s hydrocarbon sector also showed dependence on external supply. Domestic natural gas production declined by 4.9% to 58 million cubic metres, while gas imports increased by 163% to 276 million cubic metres.

Crude oil production rose by 2.6% to 39,000 tonnes. Petroleum product output increased to 333,000 tonnes, from 316,000 tonnes a year earlier.

Taken together, the data show higher electricity generation alongside rising gas imports and a wider power import balance during the period reported. This aligns with ongoing regional energy trade activity despite continued investment in domestic renewable generation expansion.
