Bulgargaz, Bulgaria’s state-owned gas supplier, has launched a tender for liquefied natural gas (LNG) procurement intended for strategic storage. The tender is linked to preparations for the upcoming heating season and focuses on strengthening national gas reserves ahead of winter 2026–2027. The company is seeking an LNG cargo equivalent to 1 million MWh.

LNG delivery and storage route

Delivery of the LNG cargo is planned for the Alexandroupoli LNG terminal in Greece in early July. Following regasification, the gas will be transported to Bulgaria and stored at the Chiren underground gas storage facility. The procurement is designed to ensure sufficient volumes are available during peak demand periods.

Tender participation and qualification

To secure competitive offers, Bulgargaz has invited 40 international producers and trading companies to take part in the tender. The selected participants have previously expressed interest in supplying the Bulgarian market. They have also completed Bulgargaz’s qualification and approval process.

Framework strategy introduced in September 2025

The LNG purchase forms part of a broader supply strategy introduced by Bulgargaz in September 2025. Under this framework, the company is gradually building up gas inventories. It is also diversifying procurement sources with the aim of improving supply security and reducing exposure to price volatility during winter months.
