In a significant advancement for energy storage in North Macedonia, YESS Power has successfully commissioned a 60 MWh battery energy storage system at the Novaci solar power plant. This development is pivotal as it marks the first large-scale hybrid solar-plus-storage facility in the country and the broader Western Balkans region.
The project was executed by YESS Power, which operates as the storage division of Topkapi Endustri. The company undertook a comprehensive scope of work that included engineering design, procurement of equipment, on-site assembly, and system commissioning. The battery technology utilized in this project was supplied by Cubenergy, showcasing collaboration within the energy sector.
The integration of this battery system enhances the operational capabilities of the Novaci facility, which boasts an installed capacity of 55 MW. Since its inception in 2023, the solar plant has generated approximately 85 GWh annually, providing electricity to around 30,000 households. The ownership and management of this facility are under Mey Energy, a domestic renewable energy developer, highlighting the increasing involvement of local enterprises in driving the region’s energy transition.
This initiative not only signifies a growing confidence in renewable energy backed by storage solutions but also reflects broader trends in energy policy that emphasize sustainability and local resource utilization. While specific investment figures for the battery project have not been disclosed, its successful deployment is expected to encourage further investments in similar technologies across Southeast Europe.
