Recent data from the Electricity System Operator (ESO) reveals a significant shift in Bulgaria’s electricity landscape during the early weeks of 2026. From January 1 to February 15, electricity production fell by 4.84% compared to the same period in 2025, totaling 6.13 TWh. This decline coincides with an increase in domestic electricity consumption, which rose by 7.5% year-on-year, reaching 6.59 TWh. Consequently, Bulgaria has turned to net imports, amounting to 462 GWh, to meet its energy demands.

The decrease in overall electricity output is largely attributed to a notable reduction in baseload generation from coal and nuclear sources, which dropped by 14.1% to 4.65 TWh. This trend indicates a potential restructuring of Bulgaria’s energy production mix as the country grapples with changing market conditions and regulatory pressures.

Renewable energy contributions displayed mixed results during this period. Generation from renewable sources connected to the transmission network saw a slight increase of 1.96%, totaling 374.1 GWh. However, output from renewables within the distribution network experienced a more substantial decline of 15.75%, falling to 312.1 GWh. These contrasting trends underscore the complexities and challenges facing Bulgaria’s energy sector as it navigates the transition towards more sustainable energy practices.

The evolving dynamics in Bulgaria’s power sector reflect broader regional trends and highlight the ongoing challenges of balancing production capabilities with rising consumption demands. As the country looks to stabilize its energy supply amidst these fluctuations, stakeholders will need to closely monitor both domestic and international factors influencing energy policy and market strategies.
