A new initiative aimed at establishing a national hydrogen strategy in Bosnia and Herzegovina has commenced, marking a significant step towards enhancing the country’s energy landscape. This two-year project, which recently entered its implementation phase following a meeting in Sarajevo, focuses on developing a comprehensive approach to hydrogen technology. The initiative is spearheaded by the Association for Green Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Sources (H2OIE), alongside partners including EPBiH, Energoinvest, and Green Sustainable Solutions. Financial backing is provided by the Central European Initiative and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
During the kickoff session, stakeholders engaged in discussions about regional experiences and identified practical pathways for the adoption of hydrogen technologies. The consensus among participants is that hydrogen should not be viewed merely as a fleeting trend but rather as a long-term tool for enhancing energy resilience and industrial competitiveness. This perspective aligns with broader European climate and energy objectives, emphasizing the need for a sustainable transition.
The project aims to bolster domestic knowledge and institutional capacity through various activities such as workshops, advisory missions, and study visits across Europe. These efforts are designed to facilitate the gradual implementation of hydrogen solutions within the country. A key deliverable will be the National Hydrogen Strategy, which will include a detailed roadmap to assist businesses and institutions in evaluating their technical capabilities, identifying limitations, and determining priority areas for development.
Given Bosnia and Herzegovina’s robust renewable resources, established industrial infrastructure, and strategic geographical position, hydrogen is viewed as a strategic opportunity for decarbonizing industry and enhancing energy security. Furthermore, this initiative seeks to deepen integration into the European energy market. By combining local expertise with international collaboration, this coordinated effort represents a foundational move towards systematically advancing hydrogen development as a core pillar of the nation’s long-term energy strategy.
