A significant utility-scale solar initiative is progressing in Montenegro as the Environmental Protection Agency has initiated the environmental approval process for a project proposed by Qair Montenegro, a subsidiary of France’s Qair International. This development marks an important step in enhancing the country’s renewable energy capacity.
The proposed solar power plant will have an installed capacity of 60 MW and is set to be located in Petrovići, within the municipality of Nikšić. According to the documentation released by the agency, the project will cover approximately 51 hectares and incorporate 85,650 high-efficiency photovoltaic modules, each with a capacity of 720 W. These panels are sourced from Trina Solar and are specifically designed for large-scale energy production.
This project adds to Qair Montenegro’s expanding portfolio in the Nikšić region. In December, the Montenegrin government approved urban and technical conditions for another solar project of 60 MW, named Jabuka, which is also situated in a village sharing its name.
Currently, Qair’s most developed project in Montenegro is the Rudine solar power plant, which has a capacity of 50 MW and is also located near Nikšić. This project received its environmental permit earlier this year and secured a grid connection agreement with CGES, the transmission system operator. The Rudine plant is projected to commence commercial operations by the end of 2028, contributing to Montenegro’s strategy to enhance renewable electricity generation.
