Sunotec has connected a 150 MW/379 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Brusartsi. The installation adds to Bulgaria’s expanding grid-connected battery storage fleet.
Second Bulgarian project to start operation
The Brusartsi facility is Sunotec’s second large-scale battery installation to enter operation in Bulgaria within a few weeks. In July, the company commissioned a 50 MW/126 MWh BESS in Byala Slatina. Together, the two projects provide 200 MW of power capacity and 505 MWh of storage capacity.
Trading and optimisation role of GEN-I
Both battery systems will be operated in partnership with Slovenian energy trader GEN-I. GEN-I will handle electricity trading and optimisation of the battery systems’ operation. The arrangement covers both the Brusartsi and Byala Slatina installations.
BESS pipeline and expected commissioning timeline
Sunotec is also developing additional projects as part of its expansion in Bulgaria. The company has nine further BESS projects under development with a combined capacity of 195 MW/782 MWh. Commercial operation is expected within the next 12 months.
Bulgaria’s battery storage build-out supported by recovery funding
The latest connections are taking place amid a broader battery storage investment boom in Bulgaria. Part of the expansion is supported by funding under the country’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan. By early June, Bulgaria had installed around 4,011 MW/12,240 MWh of battery storage capacity, including 3,471 MW/10,768 MWh connected to the grid.
Bulgaria’s battery storage fleet is expected to exceed 6 GW/18 GWh by the end of 2026. This projection places the country among the larger Southeast European markets for energy storage capacity.
