Energo-Pro has an operational 10.75 MW / 24.31 MWh BESS in Gorna Oryahovitsa, marking a milestone for the country’s installed base. GEN-I has also acquired three battery systems totaling 30 MW / 76 MWh, indicating interest from portfolio investors.

Operational assets and portfolio investment signals

The expansion includes both new operational capacity and ownership changes tied to larger investment strategies. Energo-Pro’s BESS in Gorna Oryahovitsa provides a reference point for commercial operation in the region. GEN-I’s acquisition of three battery systems totaling 30 MW / 76 MWh reflects demand for storage exposure at scale. Together, the transactions and deployments show a shift toward broader participation by investors managing multi-asset portfolios.

Revenue stacking conditions for storage projects

Bulgaria’s investment environment supports multiple value streams for battery assets. The country benefits from strong cross-border electricity interconnections and expanding renewable generation, alongside increasing market price volatility. Demand for balancing services is also rising, while the regulatory framework continues to evolve to support energy storage projects. These factors enable batteries to participate in energy arbitrage, ancillary services, renewable integration, and portfolio optimization.

Gabare project combines solar and 600 MWh storage

OMV Petrom’s Gabare project links battery storage to a wider regional energy strategy rather than positioning it as a standalone investment. The development combines 415 MWp of solar capacity with 600 MWh of battery storage. OMV Petrom is placing the battery system within a diversified portfolio that includes natural gas, electricity generation, and renewable energy assets. The estimated investment is around €300 million, including approximately €100 million allocated to the battery component.

Market access requirements for long-term profitability

Sustaining investment momentum depends on how Bulgaria defines its market framework for storage participation. Access to balancing markets, transparent dispatch mechanisms, and reliable grid connection procedures are cited as key factors affecting long-term profitability. Continued improvement in these areas would support further growth in battery deployment across Southeast Europe. This includes participation by utilities, energy traders, integrated oil and gas companies, and infrastructure funds seeking opportunities in a more flexible, renewable-powered power system.
