Slovenia boosts electricity network upgrade support to €58.66m for 2024-2030

Slovenia has increased its electricity-network upgrade funding available to €58.66 million, which adds more than €10 million to the earlier support programme. The previous funding envelope stood at €48.15 million. The updated amount is linked to grid-modernisation needs as connection capacity becomes a priority.

EU Modernization Fund resources for medium- and high-voltage projects

The additional resources come from the EU Modernization Fund. They will be directed to medium- and high-voltage network projects scheduled for the remainder of the decade. Eligible investments are required to be included in List A of Slovenia’s indicative 2024-2030 investment programme.

Both transmission and distribution system operators are able to submit applications. The current application deadline is set at 30 August.

Network capacity, electrification and decentralised assets

The funding increase reflects recognition that network capacity is becoming one of the principal constraints on further electrification and renewable deployment. Planned upgrades to transmission and distribution infrastructure are intended to create additional space for solar and other renewable projects. The same infrastructure is also expected to accommodate battery storage, EV charging and heat pumps.

The investments are also aimed at improving system resilience as electricity consumption becomes more dependent on networks. This shift coincides with growth in the number of decentralised generating and consuming assets.

Carbon-market funding mechanism behind the Modernization Fund

Funding through the Modernization Fund ultimately comes from revenues generated by auctioning allowances under the EU Emissions Trading System. The programme illustrates how carbon-market revenues are recycled into infrastructure needed to integrate additional low-carbon generation. For Slovenia, the emphasis is moving from adding renewable capacity alone to ensuring the network can connect and operate it reliably.
