Romania is witnessing a significant evolution in its energy sector, characterized by the increasing participation of households and small producers, collectively known as prosumers. These entities are becoming pivotal in reshaping the country’s electricity framework as they generate their own power.
As reported by the Association of Prosumers and Energy Communities, prosumers have successfully installed approximately 3.4 GW of capacity, which constitutes over 15% of Romania’s overall installed generation capacity. When combined with other photovoltaic systems, solar energy contributes around 6.7 GW, amounting to nearly 30% of the total generation capacity.
Despite this impressive growth in installed capacity, the actual impact on electricity production remains modest. Current statistics indicate that solar energy, inclusive of prosumer contributions, represents about 9% of the nation’s total electricity generation.
The number of active prosumers is on an upward trajectory, now totaling around 305,000. This growth trend persists even during winter months, with an influx of 15,000 new prosumers recorded between December 2025 and January 2026. This surge reflects a heightened desire for energy independence and a decreased dependence on conventional energy sources.
Prosumers not only utilize electricity from their solar installations but also contribute surplus energy back to the grid. Their investments in solar technology are estimated at approximately €2.2 billion, primarily sourced from personal savings and bank loans; however, the role of public subsidy programs in this financing remains ambiguous.
The integration of energy storage solutions is gaining traction, with around 800 MW of storage capacity linked to prosumer systems. This advancement enhances overall energy flexibility and facilitates increased self-consumption of generated electricity.
Looking forward, projections indicate that the number of prosumers in Romania could exceed 400,000 by the end of 2026. This anticipated growth underscores a broader transition towards decentralized and more resilient methods of electricity generation within the country.
