Romania’s Electricity Market Experiences Price Fluctuations and Stable Activity

The Romanian electricity market has demonstrated a stable operational environment despite ongoing price fluctuations. In March 2026, the average price for electricity on the day-ahead market at the Romanian energy exchange OPCOM was recorded at 105.15 euros/MWh. This figure marks a slight decrease of 1.14% from March 2025, while showing a notable increase of 5.41% compared to February 2026, when the average baseload price was 99.75 euros/MWh.

In terms of traded volumes, March saw a total of 1.36 million MWh transacted on the day-ahead market, reflecting a modest year-on-year increase of 0.68%. However, this volume is down by 8.08% compared to February 2026. The average trading activity during this period was 1,824.9 MWh per hour, highlighting consistent market engagement.

The overall transaction value for electricity in March reached 148.1 million euros, which is an increase of 2.96% compared to the same month last year, although it represents a decline of 1.43% from February’s totals. The share of the day-ahead market in projected net consumption was calculated at 29.89%, indicating robust participation levels among market players.

<pOn the intraday market, trading activity totaled 158,095.2 MWh in March, which is a significant drop of 22.35% compared to March 2025 but shows an improvement of 18.36% from February 2026 levels. The average price for intraday transactions stood at 88.02 euros/MWh, reflecting a year-on-year decline of 7.29% and a decrease of 5.13% relative to the previous month.
