PPC Renewables Romania is advancing its energy storage initiatives with the integration of a new battery system at the Zephyr 1 wind farm located in Constanța County. This development marks a significant step in the company’s strategy to enhance its hybrid renewable portfolio, reflecting the growing importance of energy storage solutions in stabilizing and optimizing renewable energy generation.
The proposed battery energy storage system (BESS) is designed to deliver a capacity of 60 MW and 120 MWh. This investment, estimated at approximately 26.1 million euros, is expected to receive around 2.9 million euros from the EU-backed Modernization Fund, highlighting the role of European funding in supporting renewable energy projects in Romania.
This initiative represents PPC Renewables’ third storage project in Romania, indicating an accelerated deployment of battery systems as the company aims to achieve nearly 2 GW of renewable capacity within the Romanian market. The integration of storage capabilities is crucial for enhancing grid stability and improving the predictability of renewable energy outputs, which are often subject to variability.
The Zephyr 1 wind farm currently operates 52 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 120 MW. When combined with the nearby Zephyr 2 project, which adds another 78 turbines, the area stands as one of PPC Renewables’ primary wind energy hubs, boasting a collective capacity of 180 MW. This strategic positioning underscores the company’s commitment to expanding its footprint in Romania’s renewable energy landscape.
PPC Renewables emphasizes that this project is part of a larger vision to integrate renewable generation with storage, aiming to bolster system flexibility and resilience while facilitating the ongoing incorporation of clean energy sources into Romania’s electricity sector. As countries across Southeast Europe seek to transition towards more sustainable energy systems, such developments are pivotal in achieving long-term energy goals.
