Romania has increased a temporary diesel excise reduction to 25% for the first half of September. The change is linked to higher international fuel prices that could raise domestic transport and inflation costs. The adjustment applies during the period when the government is seeking to limit the impact of diesel price movements on downstream costs.
Diesel excise duty level for 1–15 September
From 1–15 September, excise duty on standard diesel is set at around €400 per 1,000 litres. This level is approximately €133 below the normal rate. In the previous two-week period, relief covered by an excise reduction was 20%.
International price trigger under adjustment mechanism
The larger intervention followed a sharp rise in international reference prices used under Romania’s adjustment mechanism. Platts diesel quotations increased by 45.65%, while the relevant standard average price rose by 25.45%. The mechanism was introduced to avoid setting fuel-tax relief at a single level during periods of volatility in international markets.
The excise adjustment is recalculated every two weeks and can move in either direction. The government focuses on how diesel prices feed through into freight, logistics and consumer inflation. The 25% reduction is intended as a temporary stabiliser rather than a structural change to Romanian fuel taxation.
Prospects for further two-week changes
Future excise relief will depend on international prices and domestic pump costs. That framework can leave transport companies exposed to repeated two-week adjustments if global diesel markets remain volatile. The next recalculation would follow the same two-week schedule tied to reference-price movements.
