Romania: Electricity consumption and production in 2024

According to data released by the National Institute for Statistics (INS), Romania’s electricity consumption in 2024 reached 50.51 TWh, marking a 1.8% increase compared to the previous year. Industrial electricity consumption accounted for 38.27 TWh, representing a 1.6% rise, while household consumption rose by 2.7%, reaching 11.85 TWh. Public lighting consumption, however, saw a decrease of 6.7%, totaling approximately 396.4 GWh.

In terms of electricity production, Romania generated 52.45 TWh in 2024, a 9.1% drop compared to 2023. Thermal power plant production declined by 3.1% to 17.46 TWh, while hydropower output decreased significantly by 23.1%, reaching 14.31 TWh. Nuclear power production from the Cernavoda plant also fell by 2.5%, totaling 10.91 TWh. Wind power production in 2024 dropped by 16.4% to 6.34 TWh. In contrast, solar power generation saw a substantial increase of 53.2%, reaching 3.41 TWh.

Electricity exports in 2024 amounted to 10.84 TWh, a decrease of 6.8% compared to the previous year. However, electricity imports surged by 60.2%, totaling 13.8 TWh.

Regarding the overall production of primary energy resources, Romania produced 16,916.1 thousand tons of oil equivalent in 2024, a 4.2% decline from 2023. Coal production decreased by 14.2%, totaling 1,924.7 thousand tons of oil equivalent, while oil production dropped by 4.3%, reaching 2,674.8 thousand tons of oil equivalent. On the other hand, natural gas production increased slightly by 0.9%, reaching 7,570.6 thousand tons of oil equivalent.
