Coal-fired output from Pljevlja covered 65% of EPCG summer generation

Montenegro’s Pljevlja thermal power plant supplied around 65% of electricity generated by state utility EPCG between June and August. The period coincided with drought conditions that reduced output from the country’s hydroelectric fleet. As a result, coal-fired generation became more central to meeting demand.

Pljevlja generation during June to August

The plant generated approximately 442,000 MWh over the three-month period. It operated at an average load of around 200 MW. Daily production averaged close to 4,800 MWh.

EPCG valued the output at more than €51 million. The company said purchasing the same volume on Hungary’s HUPX exchange at prevailing prices would have cost about €57.4 million.

Lignite supply and continuous operation

Pljevlja’s continuous operation was supported by lignite from the nearby mine. EPCG operates the mine as part of an integrated mining and generation complex.

Dry weather reduced generation from Montenegro’s hydroelectric assets, which normally form a dominant part of the national mix. With hydrology weakening, the thermal plant’s contribution increased during the summer months.

Hydrological exposure and supply reliance

The summer performance highlighted a short-term security-of-supply dilemma for Montenegro. The country is increasing renewable capacity while remaining exposed to hydrological volatility.

When reservoir conditions deteriorate, Pljevlja continues to provide a domestic baseload alternative to potentially expensive electricity imports.
