Reservoir levels near 70% support planned hydropower output in North Macedonia

North Macedonia’s reservoirs are approximately 70% full, a level described as sufficient stored water to maintain planned hydropower production and support stability of the national electricity system. The Ministry of Energy said reservoir management continues to follow operating plans that balance near-term generation with water preservation for later periods. The ministry added that hydropower provides both electricity and ancillary services, including rapid balancing and frequency support.

The Ministry of Energy said the operating approach is designed to keep water available beyond immediate generation needs. Hydropower’s role extends to system services, including rapid balancing and frequency support. Officials said this discipline remains relevant as summer conditions affect inflows and operational choices.

May 2026 generation coverage and domestic demand

Official data show that North Macedonia generated 462,653 MWh of electricity in May 2026. That output covered approximately 96.5% of domestic demand. The figures indicate a stronger domestic supply position than periods when the country relies heavily on regional imports.

Hydro and wind output changes in ESM reporting

State-owned producer ESM reported that hydropower generation increased by 76% year on year. ESM also said wind production rose by approximately 10%. The company attributed higher hydro output to improved water availability and operational planning. It added that preserving reservoirs will remain important through the rest of the summer.

Commercial value of dispatch timing and summer constraints

A 70% filling level was described as providing meaningful flexibility, but not surplus water for unrestricted generation. Reservoir value depends on seasonal inflows, electricity-price expectations, environmental obligations, and reserves needed for winter demand. Hydropower can be dispatched rapidly during peak-price hours, giving it particular commercial value at those times. The Ministry said preserving water for peak periods can produce higher revenue than continuous operation when regional solar output depresses daytime prices.

Weather monitoring and regional market implications

The Ministry said it coordinates with ESM and power-system institutions to monitor weather forecasts, reservoir levels, and hydrological conditions. It said monitoring is becoming more important as heatwaves and irregular rainfall create wider differences between wet and dry years. North Macedonia’s stronger hydrological position provides a buffer against regional volatility. It also allows the country to reduce expensive imports during scarcity hours and potentially increase exports when neighbouring markets experience evening deficits.
