Household solar in Romania sees rapid uptake of battery storage

Romania’s residential photovoltaic market expanded during the first half of 2026, with E.ON Energie Romania installing more than 1,200 rooftop systems under its Solar Home programme. Installations rose 30% year on year. The cumulative total delivered since the programme started in 2020 reached more than 10,500 systems.

Battery storage share rises in E.ON household projects

A larger change is taking place in how systems are configured behind the solar panels. Battery storage was part of only about 10% of E.ON’s household projects in previous years. In contrast, the share increased to 91% during the first six months of 2026.

The shift points to a move from grid-connected generation toward integrated energy setups intended to increase self-consumption. With a battery, surplus midday solar electricity can be used during evening hours. This is expected to reduce exposure to retail electricity prices and dependence on the distribution network.

Solar demand continues without new Green House funding round

Consumer interest remained strong even without a new funding round under Romania’s Green House photovoltaic programme. A June survey commissioned by E.ON found that 17% of respondents plan to install solar panels during the next year, unchanged from the prior survey.

The survey also showed that households already using rooftop photovoltaics increased from 8% to 11% over one year. Another 15% of respondents said they were considering buying a home battery. More than half of existing solar owners planned to add storage within the following 12 months.

Implications for distribution networks and installer requirements

The growth of distributed storage could affect power system operations beyond household electricity bills. Aggregated batteries could provide flexibility to distribution networks and help reduce evening demand peaks. This would require appropriate metering, control systems and market rules.

The transition from solar-only packages to combined photovoltaic and battery systems changes project requirements for suppliers and installers. It increases the value of each project while raising needs for system design, inverter compatibility, fire safety, commissioning and long-term warranty management.
