In early May, the energy markets experienced notable fluctuations, largely influenced by geopolitical developments and supply dynamics. Brent crude oil futures for the ICE Front Month contract peaked at $114.44 per barrel on May 4 but subsequently entered a downward trajectory. By May 7, prices had dipped to a low of $100.06 per barrel before closing the week at $101.29 per barrel on May 8, marking a decrease of 6.4% from the previous week.
The decline in oil prices can be attributed to a prevailing bearish sentiment driven by expectations surrounding a potential agreement between the United States and Iran. While geopolitical tensions intermittently exerted upward pressure on prices, the overall market sentiment leaned towards caution, contributing to the downward correction.
Similarly, the European gas market mirrored these trends. TTF gas futures for the ICE Front Month contract reached a high of €48.14 per megawatt-hour on May 4, only to fall to €43.56 per megawatt-hour by May 7. A modest recovery brought prices up to €44.14 per megawatt-hour on May 8, reflecting a decline of 3.5% compared to the prior week’s closing figures.
The anticipation of a US-Iran agreement is expected to alleviate global supply concerns and potentially reopen critical shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, which could enhance future LNG flow prospects and improve market sentiment.
In contrast to the declining trends in oil and gas markets, CO₂ emission allowance futures in the EEX market exhibited resilience. Starting at €73.06 per tonne on May 4, prices increased throughout the week, peaking at €76.07 per tonne on May 6. By the end of the week on May 8, settlement prices were recorded at €75.20 per tonne, indicating a rise of 1.9% from the previous week’s close.
Overall, the energy commodity markets during this period reflected a mixed macroeconomic environment. While expectations of geopolitical de-escalation exerted downward pressure on oil and gas prices, carbon markets remained robust due to ongoing structural influences from EU emissions policies.
