MOL Group Secures Extension for NIS Stake Negotiations with GazpromNeft

Negotiations concerning the ownership structure of the Serbian energy company NIS have received a significant boost as MOL Group has been granted a two-week extension to finalize discussions with GazpromNeft. This extension allows talks to continue until 6 June, alleviating immediate pressures associated with the impending deadline.

Dubravka Đedovic, a representative of the Serbian government, confirmed that local authorities are actively engaged in the negotiations, which are pivotal for establishing a shareholder agreement related to the transaction. The government is focused on ensuring that national interests are preserved while also aiming for long-term market stability.

The urgency surrounding these discussions is underscored by regulatory deadlines set by the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), which has imposed restrictions aimed at Russia’s energy sector. The expiration of the previous negotiation deadline would have intensified pressure on all parties involved, potentially complicating the transaction further.

GazpromNeft, which currently holds a controlling stake in NIS, had previously submitted a draft agreement to MOL regarding the sale of its ownership share. Zsolt Hernadi, an executive from MOL, indicated that negotiations have advanced significantly and are now in a final and highly sensitive phase. Despite notable progress, several technical aspects and remaining conditions still require resolution before any final agreement can be reached.

In this context, representatives from MOL have stated that all major stakeholders related to the potential transaction have been included in discussions. A successful resolution could enhance regional energy stability, bolster supply security, and align with Serbia’s long-term strategic energy goals.

Serbian officials have reiterated that the negotiation process remains complex and politically sensitive. However, ensuring reliable energy supplies and protecting the country’s strategic interests remain top priorities as these critical discussions progress.
