Petrobrazi runs above 98% in first nine months of 2026

OMV Petrom’s Petrobrazi refinery in Romania ran at above 98% utilisation in the first nine months of 2026, including 100% in the third quarter. The throughput supports Romanian fuel supply and positions the refinery to benefit from strong product margins.

Higher throughput spreads fixed refinery costs across more production, while each additional barrel can capture scarcity pricing. The benefit is particularly strong when diesel and jet fuel cracks are elevated.

Integrated companies can optimise across crude production, refining, wholesale sales and retail distribution. Petrobrazi is part of a Romanian energy system that combines domestic hydrocarbon production, a large gas-fired power plant and Neptun Deep gas, expected from 2027.

The combination of domestic production, power generation, refining and future gas supply can reduce some supply-chain risks that standalone refiners find harder to manage. Petrobrazi is being modernised, including its electrical infrastructure and new low-carbon projects.

Europe’s refining sector faces the challenge of capturing current margins while preparing for lower-carbon fuels and tighter environmental standards. Petrobrazi is an important reference point for the regional oil market; continued operation near full capacity could help Romania remain a stable product supplier when imported diesel is expensive.

Maintenance or an unplanned outage could quickly affect nearby markets and reduce Romania’s supply buffer, particularly when imported diesel is expensive and inventories are thin. Continued high utilisation would support Romanian fuel supply and regional exports.

The outlook for high utilisation remains favourable for the fourth quarter of 2026. Refinery cracks may be lower in the first quarter of 2027 as global refinery runs recover, but Petrobrazi is expected to remain competitively positioned. Maintenance timing, diesel cracks and regional export flows are factors to watch for the refinery and nearby markets.
