February 2026 marked a notable shift in the Hungarian electricity market, as the average price on the day-ahead market (DAM) of the Hungarian energy exchange HUPX fell to 113.29 euros/MWh. This figure represents a substantial 24.7% decrease from January’s average baseload price of 150.41 euros/MWh. The decline was mirrored in the peak price category, which dropped to 122.26 euros/MWh, reflecting a 30.7% reduction from the previous month.

The trading landscape also experienced a contraction, with the total day-ahead traded volume reaching 2.95 million MWh. This figure is down 12.7% compared to January’s volume of 3.41 million MWh, although it remains 21% higher than the same month in 2025, when only 2.44 million MWh were traded. Additionally, the intraday continuous market saw a total of 973,062 MWh traded, indicating an 11.5% decline from January’s activity.

<pDespite these decreases in trading volumes and prices, HUPX maintained a stable membership base with 116 registered members on the day-ahead market and 108 members on the intraday continuous market. This stability suggests that while trading activity has diminished, interest and participation in the market remain consistent among stakeholders.

<pThe developments in February highlight ongoing dynamics within Hungary's electricity sector, where fluctuations in pricing and trading volumes can reflect broader economic conditions and energy supply-demand balances. Market participants will continue to monitor these trends closely as they navigate the evolving landscape of energy trading in Southeast Europe.
