Helleniq Energy has officially launched its operations in Romania’s renewable energy sector with the commissioning of two solar power plants. Developed by its subsidiary, Helleniq Renewables, these facilities represent the company’s inaugural green energy assets in the Romanian market.
Located in southern Romania, specifically in Merenii de Jos (Teleorman county) and Ianca (Olt county), the two solar parks boast a combined installed capacity of 58 MW. They are already integrated into the national electricity transmission network. When fully operational, these installations are projected to generate sufficient electricity to meet the annual consumption needs of approximately 60,000 households. This initiative not only contributes to clean energy production but also aligns with Romania’s efforts to transition towards a lower-carbon energy system by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing the share of renewable generation.
The commissioning of these solar facilities marks the first phase of a larger investment strategy established through a partnership agreement with Metlen, signed in 2023. This agreement encompasses the development and acquisition of four solar projects across Romania, collectively targeting an installed capacity of 211 MW. Additionally, two further solar power plants under this agreement are currently in development, expected to add another 153 MW, with commercial operations anticipated by 2026.
Helleniq Energy’s ambitions in Romania extend beyond solar energy. The company is also advancing a wind energy project in eastern Romania, specifically a 96 MW wind farm in Galati, which is slated for completion in the second quarter of 2027. Upon finalization, Helleniq Energy’s total renewable capacity in Romania will surpass 300 MW.
The company has outlined a broader pipeline for renewable investments within Romania, now exceeding 850 MW. This portfolio includes not only solar and wind projects but also energy storage installations. The integration of energy storage is crucial for balancing renewable production and enhancing the reliability of both national and regional electricity systems.
Recognizing Romania as a strategic market due to its significant renewable potential and supportive transition policies, Helleniq Energy has expressed its ongoing commitment to exploring additional investment opportunities. This includes a focus on large-scale solar and wind generation as well as storage technologies aimed at improving electricity network flexibility.
