GRITA 2 procurement timeline and commissioning target
Greek and Italian transmission operators are preparing procurement for the 1 GW GRITA 2 interconnector, with commercial operation still targeted for 2033. ADMIE and Terna expect to launch tenders covering the submarine cable and converter stations by the end of 2027. Contract awards are expected in 2028.
Before procurement begins, the operators must complete technical studies and finalise equipment specifications. Contractor selection for seabed surveys is under way. Offshore investigations are expected to start in early 2027.
Seabed surveys, cable route and converter design inputs
The seabed surveys are intended to establish the final cable route. They will also provide information needed to design the submarine connection and converter infrastructure. This work is part of the lead-up to procurement activities for the interconnector.
On the Greek side, an environmental impact study is expected to be submitted shortly. Approval is targeted during 2027. In parallel, cooperation and joint procurement agreements are being prepared to govern delivery of the project.
Cross-border transfer capacity between Greece and Italy
GRITA 2 is designed to add 1 GW of electricity transfer capacity between Greece and Italy. The additional capacity is intended to expand opportunities for cross-border trading and renewable power exchange. The project’s schedule depends on completing surveys, permitting, and procurement preparations in time.
The immediate focus is meeting the requirements needed to preserve the 2033 commissioning target.
