Electricity production in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina fell in July even as electricity imports were reduced substantially. Gross electricity output reached 508 GWh, down 4.7% from 533 GWh in July 2025. Net electricity production totalled 462 GWh.
Generation mix: thermal leads, hydropower and wind follow
Thermal power remained the dominant source of generation, contributing 60.6% of gross output. Hydropower accounted for 31.1%, while wind farms provided 8.3%. On a net basis, thermal plants generated 273 GWh, hydropower produced 147 GWh, and wind supplied 42 GWh.
Imports and exports contract versus July 2025
Cross-border flows declined sharply compared with last year, with both imports and exports lower. Imports fell to 68 GWh, less than half of the 151 GWh recorded in July 2025. Exports dropped to 71 GWh from 135 GWh.
The figures point to a considerably smaller volume of cross-border trading by the Federation during the month even though domestic generation declined only moderately.
Coal production drops sharply, reducing fuel supply
The underlying coal sector showed a larger contraction than electricity generation. Brown-coal production fell to 211,783 tonnes, down 29.6% year on year. Lignite output dropped 19.4% to 112,864 tonnes, from 140,092 tonnes.
The reduction in coal supply is significant because thermal generation continues to account for well over half of the Federation’s power production. Persistent mining weakness could increase the operational importance of hydropower, wind generation and regional imports during periods of stronger electricity demand.
