Weekly average electricity prices increased across major European markets during the third week of July compared with the previous week, according to AleaSoft Energy Forecasting. France recorded the sharpest weekly rise, while the Nordic market saw the smallest increase. The assessment covers changes relative to the prior week.

France posted the largest weekly percentage increase at 25%. Germany followed with a 21% rise, and Spain recorded an 18% increase. Other markets analysed rose by between 8.9% in the Netherlands and 12% in Italy and Portugal, while the Nordic market increased by 1.2%.

Weekly averages above €110/MWh except Nordic

During the week of 13 July, weekly average prices exceeded €110/MWh in most European electricity markets. The Nordic market was the only exception, with a weekly average of €57.36/MWh.

Italy recorded the highest weekly average price at €161.23/MWh. Weekly averages in other markets ranged from €112.62/MWh in the Netherlands to €131.47/MWh in Great Britain.

The Nordic market remained below €85/MWh throughout the entire third week of July. Germany, Belgium, France and the Netherlands also recorded daily averages below that level during the weekend.

Northern Europe sees lowest daily pricing on Sunday

The Nordic market recorded its lowest daily average price of the week on Sunday, 19 July, at €20.69/MWh. Daily pricing patterns differed across regions as continental markets moved higher during parts of the week.

Across much of continental Europe, daily averages exceeded €100/MWh from Monday, 13 July through Friday, 17 July in most markets. Italy and Great Britain also remained above that threshold during the weekend.

Italy registered the highest daily average among the markets analysed on Thursday, 16 July, at €170.47/MWh. That level was Italy’s highest daily average since 13 February 2025. Prices later increased further to €172.56/MWh on Monday, 20 July, the highest level since 21 January 2025.

Higher gas and carbon costs alongside weaker solar and demand

The weekly rise in European wholesale electricity prices reflected multiple drivers cited by AleaSoft Energy Forecasting. These included higher natural gas and EU carbon allowance prices, lower solar generation across most markets and stronger electricity demand in Germany, Spain and Italy.

Aleasoft also pointed to lower wind generation contributing to higher prices in Germany and Portugal. This added upward pressure on wholesale markets alongside gas and carbon cost movements.

AleaSoft expects declines in fourth week of July amid lower demand

For the fourth week of July, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting expects electricity prices to decline in markets including Germany, Belgium and France supported by lower demand . A substantial increase in wind generation in Germany is also expected to contribute to lower prices .

AleaSoft said movements in TTF gas prices will remain a key factor influencing wholesale electricity markets across Europe .
