Europe Sees Significant Surge in Solar and Wind Energy Production in Late December

The European energy market experienced a notable rebound in solar and wind energy production during the week of December 22, following a period of decline. Key markets such as Portugal and Spain reported significant increases in solar photovoltaic output, with Portugal’s production rising by 48% and Spain’s by 21%. Italy also saw a robust increase of 29%, while France recorded a 23% uptick, indicating a recovery from previous weeks’ downturns.

Several countries set new daily records for solar generation in December. Germany achieved a peak output of 87 GWh on December 25, while Italy and France followed closely with peaks of 66 GWh and 54 GWh, respectively, on December 28. These figures highlight the growing capacity and efficiency of solar technologies across major European markets.

Looking ahead to the week of December 29, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting anticipates further growth in solar production in Italy and Spain. However, Germany is projected to see a decline, suggesting potential regional disparities in solar energy performance as winter progresses.

Wind energy production also maintained its upward trajectory during the same week, with Italy leading the gains at an impressive increase of 80%, marking its second consecutive week of growth. Spain and France contributed with increases of 21% and 20%, respectively, both continuing their positive trends. Conversely, Germany saw a modest rise of 15%, recovering from prior declines, while Portugal faced a decrease of 12% in wind generation.

On December 24, France achieved a significant milestone with wind energy output reaching 404 GWh, the highest daily total since late January. This surge underscores the importance of wind energy as a reliable source during winter months when demand typically increases.

For the upcoming week starting December 29, forecasts from AleaSoft indicate that wind production is expected to rise in Germany and Italy but may decline in Spain, France, and Portugal. This mixed outlook reflects the variability inherent in renewable energy generation influenced by seasonal weather patterns.

Overall, these developments illustrate the dynamic nature of Europe’s renewable energy landscape as countries adapt to changing production capabilities.
