The energy landscape in Montenegro is poised for significant transformation as EPCG advances its plans for the Kruševo Hydropower Project on the Piva River. The utility aims to finalize critical project documentation by the end of this year, collaborating closely with EDF, a French utility known for its expertise in energy projects.
The proposed hydropower facility is designed to have an installed capacity of 82 MW, with an anticipated annual electricity output of approximately 170 GWh. As part of the preparatory work, geological investigations commenced in late 2025, which are essential for advancing to subsequent phases of development. This groundwork follows a contract established in November 2024 with the Jaroslav Černi Institute for Water Management, tasked with both project design and comprehensive field research.
EPCG is currently focused on identifying the most effective technical concept for the hydropower plant. A pivotal consideration is the potential upgrade of the project into a pumped-storage hydropower facility, a move that could significantly improve grid flexibility and enhance system balancing capabilities across the region.
Upon determining the optimal technical approach, EPCG will proceed to develop full technical documentation and initiate processes that will lead to signing an EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contract. This step is crucial for moving forward with construction and operational planning.
The collaboration with EDF is formalized through a memorandum of understanding, which outlines a potential expanded role for EDF in various aspects of the project, including design, financing, and operational management. This partnership underscores the strategic importance of international cooperation in developing Montenegro’s energy infrastructure.
While EPCG also evaluates another hydropower initiative, the Komparnica Project, it has indicated that HPP Kruševo is currently prioritized for development. Future decisions regarding Komarnica will hinge on ongoing assessments and strategic planning outcomes, reflecting EPCG’s commitment to optimizing its project portfolio in alignment with regional energy demands.
