Electricity demand increases across major European markets as temperatures rise

In the third week of June, electricity demand increased across all major European markets, extending the upward seasonal pattern seen versus the previous week. Italy recorded the largest rise at +12%, while Germany posted the smallest increase at +1.2%. Other markets also reported growth, with gains ranging from +3.8% in Belgium to +8.2% in Spain. Germany, France, Portugal, Italy and Belgium maintained their growth trend for a second consecutive week.

Spain continued to expand for a fifth straight week of rising electricity demand. The same period also saw average temperatures rise across all analyzed markets. Higher temperatures supported increased electricity consumption, driven mainly by cooling demand. Belgium recorded the largest temperature increase at +7.4°C, while Portugal saw the smallest rise at +2.1°C.

Temperature increases linked to higher cooling-driven consumption

Across Spain, Italy, Great Britain, Germany and France, temperature increases fell within a range of +2.8°C to +6.3°C. France was among the most affected by warmer conditions during this period. These temperature changes coincided with higher electricity use across the region’s major markets. The demand increases were therefore observed alongside broad-based warming in the same week.

AleaSoft forecasts further demand growth in late June

For the fourth week of June, forecasts from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting indicate that electricity demand is expected to keep increasing across the main European markets. The outlook points to sustained summer weather impacts and ongoing consumption growth across the region, AleaSoft reports . This follows the continued upward seasonal trend recorded in the third week of June across all major markets.
