In January 2026, the Croatian energy exchange, CROPEX, recorded a total electricity trading volume of 912,694.6 MWh, reflecting an 8% decline compared to December 2025. This downturn is notable as it also represents a 21.2% decrease from the same month in the previous year. The breakdown of this volume indicates that 658,973.3 MWh were traded on the day-ahead market, while 253,721.3 MWh were exchanged on the intraday market.
Despite the reduction in trading volume, prices on both markets experienced significant increases. The average daily base price on the day-ahead market surged to 143.16 euros/MWh, marking a 26.6% rise from December 2025. Additionally, the average euro-peak price reached 165.66 euros/MWh, which is an increase of 32.1%. On the intraday market, the average price was recorded at 146.43 euros/MWh, representing a 29.7% hike compared to the previous month.
The average daily traded volume on the day-ahead market stood at 21,257.2 MWh. CROPEX, which commenced operations on 11 March 2016, was established through a partnership with Nord Pool and is co-owned by the Croatian electricity transmission system operator (HOPS) and the Croatian electricity market operator (HROTE). The intraday market was introduced in April 2017, and CROPEX’s day-ahead market successfully coupled with MRC markets via the Croatian–Slovenian border on 19 June 2018.
This combination of lower trading volumes and rising prices may indicate shifting dynamics within Croatia’s electricity market, potentially influenced by changes in demand patterns or regulatory adjustments affecting supply and pricing mechanisms.
