The rehabilitation of the Chaira Pumped-Storage Hydropower Plant in Bulgaria is making significant strides, as confirmed by caretaker Energy Minister Traicho Traikov during his recent site visit. This facility, which has been a critical component of Bulgaria’s energy infrastructure, is undergoing extensive repairs after a series of equipment failures in 2022 necessitated a comprehensive overhaul.
Currently, the refurbishment of unit 2 is nearing completion, while unit 3 is anticipated to resume operations by early April. The repair contract for unit 1 has already been finalized, indicating a structured approach to the rehabilitation process. However, the fourth unit presents considerable technical challenges, complicating its restoration compared to the other units.
To ensure a systematic recovery, Minister Traikov has mandated the development of a detailed restoration schedule, which will outline the sequence and timeline for the remaining rehabilitation efforts. This plan aims to provide transparency and will be made publicly accessible. Traikov noted that the plant had maintained solid operational conditions approximately 16 years ago, highlighting the importance of addressing the current technical issues to restore its full capacity.
The ongoing rehabilitation efforts are crucial for enhancing Bulgaria’s energy security and operational reliability of its pumped-storage capabilities. As these units come back online, they are expected to contribute significantly to balancing supply and demand in the national grid, particularly as the country navigates an evolving energy landscape.
