The Albanian electricity exchange, ALPEX, has reported a remarkable surge in its day-ahead trading activities for January 2026, with total electricity traded reaching 186.97 GWh. This figure represents a 10.9% month-on-month increase and an impressive 89.5% rise compared to the same month in the previous year, reflecting a robust growth trajectory in the regional electricity market.
Breaking down the trading volumes, the Kosovo bidding zone accounted for 123 GWh, while the Albania bidding zone saw 121.2 GWh traded. The average market clearing price was recorded at 93.54 euros/MWh for the Albania zone and 101.65 euros/MWh for Kosovo, leading to an overall average price on ALPEX of 97.15 euros/MWh. These prices indicate a competitive market environment as participants navigate varying regional pricing dynamics.
The total transaction value on ALPEX for January was approximately 37.3 million euros, marking a significant year-on-year increase of 24.7%. This financial growth underscores the increasing importance of ALPEX as a central hub for electricity trading in Southeast Europe.
ALPEX was established in October 2020 by Albania’s transmission system operator, OST, and its Kosovo counterpart, KOSTT. The exchange conducted its inaugural auction in April 2023 and has since expanded its membership to include 36 entities across both Albania and Kosovo. This development highlights the ongoing integration of electricity markets in the region and the growing role of exchanges in facilitating trade and enhancing market efficiency.
