Bulgaria’s New 10 MW Battery Storage Project Enhances Grid Flexibility

In a significant development for Bulgaria’s energy landscape, a new utility-scale battery storage facility is nearing full operational status. The project, spearheaded by the Chinese technology provider Sinexcel, features a 10 MW battery system with a total storage capacity of 33.86 MWh, with commissioning set for 30 March. This initiative is poised to bolster grid flexibility in the region, addressing the increasing demand for reliable energy storage solutions.

Located in the village of Ivancha in northern Bulgaria, this project was developed by the local company Evklips Group. Financial backing was secured through DSK Bank, which operates under Hungary’s OTP Group, although specific investment figures have not been disclosed. This nonrecourse financing arrangement underscores the project’s viability and potential impact on the local energy market.

The installed battery system aims to facilitate electricity price arbitrage, enhancing overall network performance by providing fast-response balancing services. Such capabilities are essential for improving local grid stability and optimizing electricity trading efficiencies, particularly as Bulgaria continues to integrate more renewable energy sources into its power mix.

This project aligns with Sinexcel’s broader strategy for European expansion, focusing on advanced storage technologies and resilient power infrastructure. Established in 2007, Sinexcel boasts an impressive global portfolio that includes 15 GW of installed energy storage capacity and approximately 140,000 EV charging units worldwide, reflecting its commitment to advancing energy solutions across diverse markets.

The commissioning of this battery storage facility represents a crucial step towards enhancing Bulgaria’s energy resilience and supports the country’s transition to a more flexible and sustainable electricity system. As regional energy demands evolve, such projects will play a vital role in shaping the future of power markets in Southeast Europe.
