In a significant regulatory move, Bulgarian authorities have mandated a partial suspension of operations at the Bobov Dol thermal power plant, citing persistent breaches of environmental regulations and permit conditions. Environment Minister Rositsa Karamfilova announced that the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water in Sofia will issue an administrative order for the shutdown of boiler unit 2. This action follows a series of inspections that revealed violations of both environmental laws and the plant’s integrated operating permit, highlighting the need for stricter compliance measures.
Minister Karamfilova noted that numerous complaints from state institutions regarding the plant’s operational practices prompted further inspections and regulatory assessments before enforcement actions were deemed necessary. This reflects a broader trend in Bulgaria where aging coal plants are facing heightened regulatory pressure.
Energy Minister Iva Petrova emphasized that the government is also considering the implications of this shutdown on electricity supply security, particularly for the Sofia region. She indicated that at least one generating unit must remain operational to maintain stable electricity supply under the current configuration of the plant.
Currently, unit 2 remains active, while unit 3 is undergoing maintenance, with repairs expected to conclude by the end of the week. Minister Petrova reassured stakeholders that even with the impending shutdown order, the facility should still be capable of functioning with one unit operational.
