The Bijela wind farm project, located near Šavnik, Montenegro, is progressing towards construction following the recent approval of its environmental impact assessment by the Environmental Protection Agency. This development marks a critical milestone for renewable energy initiatives in the region, as it aligns with Montenegro’s goals to increase its sustainable energy capacity.
With an investment estimated at €200 million, the Bijela wind farm is set to feature 17 wind turbines that will collectively provide an installed capacity of up to 118.8 MW. This positions the project among the largest onshore wind developments in Montenegro. The associated infrastructure includes a 110 kV transmission line, which will connect the new Bijela substation to the existing Brezna substation, incorporating a 580-meter underground section near Brezna village.
The environmental approval confirms that the project meets necessary legal standards and outlines specific mitigation measures aimed at minimizing potential environmental impacts throughout various phases, including construction and operation. These measures are crucial for ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks while promoting sustainable energy practices.
The construction contracts for the Bijela wind farm were finalized in September 2023, with local companies Sistem MNE and Simes inzenjering engaged for the implementation. Furthermore, a network connection agreement was established with CGES in September 2024, facilitating the integration of this renewable energy source into Montenegro’s electricity grid.
Alcazar Energy Partners, the firm behind the Bijela project, has signaled its commitment to further investments in Montenegro’s energy sector, targeting a total of €500 million by 2030. The successful launch of the Bijela wind farm is expected to play a significant role in enhancing Alcazar’s regional renewable portfolio and contribute to the broader transition towards sustainable energy solutions in Southeast Europe.
