PPC Renewables is progressing with a significant energy storage initiative aimed at enhancing Romania’s electricity infrastructure. The company is constructing a battery facility linked to the Salbatica 1 wind farm, located in Tulcea County. This new battery energy storage system will boast a capacity exceeding 60 MWh, with an estimated total investment of approximately €13.6 million, which includes partial funding from European sources.
The planned storage installation will integrate seamlessly into the existing Salbatica wind complex, which comprises two adjacent wind farms featuring 70 turbines, each rated at 2 MW. The inclusion of battery storage is expected to significantly enhance network stability and optimize the management of wind-generated electricity, thereby facilitating more efficient use of renewable energy within Romania’s national grid.
This project’s financing structure combines private capital with contributions from the EU Modernization Fund, which will cover nearly €2 million of eligible costs. The grant represents just over a quarter of the total eligible expenditure for the project, with PPC Renewables providing the remaining funding.
The development of this battery facility aligns with PPC Group’s broader strategy to expand its renewable energy footprint across southeastern Europe. The company has been actively increasing its renewable portfolio, with installed capacity experiencing substantial growth in countries such as Greece, Romania, Italy, and Bulgaria. In Romania alone, PPC Renewables currently operates more than 1.5 GW of renewable capacity and is committed to advancing additional large-scale projects.
PPC Group aims to achieve nearly 13 GW of renewable capacity by 2028. The integration of storage systems like the one at Salbatica is crucial for accommodating a greater share of variable renewable generation in regional electricity markets, thus supporting the transition towards more sustainable energy solutions.
