In a significant move to bolster Romania’s industrial sector, Electrica Group has assumed the responsibility of electricity supply for the Liberty Galati steel plant. This decision, articulated by CEO Alexandru Chirita, is framed as a strategic initiative aimed at preserving essential industrial capabilities rather than merely a commercial transaction. The intervention comes amid heightened pressures on the energy supply chain, underscoring Electrica’s commitment to supporting the country’s industrial base.
Chirita emphasized that reliable access to energy is vital for both economic activity and the continuity of industrial operations, which are crucial for national resilience. The new arrangement is positioned as a foundation for long-term collaboration, enabling the steel plant to maintain operations while working towards a more stable energy future.
The urgency of this intervention is underscored by Liberty Galati’s precarious situation, where it faced imminent disconnection from the electricity grid. Such an event could have resulted in a complete halt of operations at Romania’s largest steelworks, particularly affecting its last operational blast furnace that is integral to defense-related steel production. Given the rising demand for steel in Europe, especially in light of reconstruction efforts in Ukraine, any disruption in production capacity could have profound strategic implications for Romania.
In parallel developments, the Galati Court has made progress in the legal and restructuring processes at Liberty Galati. Recent amendments to the plant’s restructuring plan have paved the way for an international auction of operational assets, set to occur in mid-March. This auction aims to attract a strategic investor who can modernize facilities and ensure sustainable production practices.
The ongoing restructuring reflects the national significance of steelmaking in Romania, with authorities emphasizing the critical need for an uninterrupted energy supply during this transitional phase. As stakeholders navigate these challenges, the focus remains on securing a robust operational framework that can support both current and future industrial demands.
