Albania has approved the development of a new solar energy project in the municipality of Diber, with the project carried out by the Albanian subsidiary of German renewable energy company Greencells Renewables. The approval supports continued international participation in Albania’s clean energy market. The project is linked to additional foreign investment interest in the sector.
Project location and developer
The approved plan sets the facility’s installed capacity at 96 MW. The solar power plant is planned near the village of Kastriot in northern Albania. The concession granted to the developer allows operation for 49 years.
Timeline and environmental documentation
Construction and commissioning are expected to be completed within three years after receiving final approval. Project documents submitted to environmental authorities state that the solar park will occupy more than 426,000 square meters. The facility design includes approximately 137,150 solar panels.
Equipment and grid integration
The project also includes 268 inverters, which convert solar energy into electricity for integration into the national power grid. The approval adds capacity as Albania seeks to expand its renewable energy base. It also aligns with efforts to diversify electricity generation sources.
In recent years, solar projects have gained momentum as Albania looks to reduce dependence on hydropower. The Diber solar plant is expected to be among the largest solar developments in Albania once completed. It is intended to provide additional electricity supply while supporting long-term sustainability and environmental objectives.
