Southeast Europe is emerging as one of Europe’s lower-priced electricity regions as renewable generation increases and battery deployment begins to change the regional price map. Bulgaria and Greece have been trading at around €185-193/MWh. This level sits below much of Central Europe, where prices have ranged around €225-270/MWh. Iberian markets have remained slightly lower at around €178-184/MWh, while Nordic markets are cheaper still.
Renewables and storage driving the Balkan price position
The Balkan pricing position is supported by growing wind and solar output in Greece. In Bulgaria, deployment of solar and battery storage is accelerating. Together, the expansion of these resources is beginning to influence how prices develop across the day. The shift in generation mix is occurring alongside increased battery presence in the region.
Market implications for daytime pricing and evening peaks
The development is commercially significant for a region that has historically faced tight generation margins and frequent electricity imports. With more renewables and storage, daytime prices could compress more often. At the same time, spreads between solar hours and evening peaks could widen. This pattern would support the commercial case for batteries, flexible generation and cross-border trading.
From generation availability to grid connection constraints
The next constraint is increasingly moving from generation availability toward grid capacity. Balancing resources and the speed at which new renewable projects can connect are becoming more prominent. This shift affects how quickly additional capacity can translate into market supply. It also shapes the timing of when new generation contributes to price formation.
