Solar photovoltaic generation gains in the week of May 25
Across major European electricity markets, solar photovoltaic (PV) generation increased during the week of May 25 versus the previous week. The reported changes were linked to stronger seasonal conditions and improving irradiation levels. Germany and Spain recorded the largest increases at 17% each, while Italy posted the smallest rise at 2.6%. France and Portugal also reported gains of 13% and 16%, respectively.
The upward pattern extended for several markets over consecutive weeks. France and Spain continued growth for four consecutive weeks, while Germany and Italy each marked a third straight week of increases. Portugal maintained expansion for a second consecutive week.
Record solar output dates: May 26 to May 29
Several markets reached new solar generation records during the same period. On May 26, Italy recorded its highest-ever solar output for a May day, producing 161 GWh. On May 28, Germany and France set all-time solar production records with 503 GWh and 179 GWh, respectively.
The Iberian Peninsula followed on May 29 with additional historic highs. Spain generated 265 GWh, while Portugal produced 32 GWh. Both figures were described as record levels for solar output in their respective markets.
June 1 forecasts diverge for solar production
For the week of June 1, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting projected different directions for solar output across markets. Italy was expected to see further growth in solar production. Germany and Spain were projected to decline in output compared with the prior week.
The forecast period was framed as a short-term adjustment following recent record levels in those markets. Italy’s expected increase contrasted with the projected reductions for Germany and Spain.
Wind energy performance in the fourth week of May
Wind energy production in Europe showed mixed results during the fourth week of May. Germany and Portugal increased output compared with the previous week, with Germany posting a rise of 14%. Portugal’s increase was reported at 0.2%.
Italy, France, and Spain extended declines into a second consecutive week. Italy recorded the steepest fall at 50%, followed by France with a 24% decrease. Spain’s decline was reported at 6.1%.
First-week-of-June outlook for wind generation
AleaSoft Energy Forecasting also projected wind recovery for the first week of June across all analyzed markets. The expectation was higher output compared with the previous week as meteorological conditions improve. The forecast described a broad rebound rather than market-specific divergence.
This outlook was based on improving weather conditions relative to the prior week, according to AleaSoft reports.
