Solar output diverges in Europe as Germany rebounds

During the week of August 24, Germany saw solar photovoltaic generation rise by 20% versus the previous week, after a decline in the week before. Solar output fell across other major European electricity markets. Portugal recorded the largest weekly drop at 19%, followed by Spain at 11% and France at 8.7%. Italy posted the smallest decrease, down 2.5%.

Second consecutive weekly declines in several solar markets

The same downward direction continued across multiple countries. Portugal and France logged declines for a second consecutive week, while Spain and Italy saw their fourth straight week of falling solar generation. For the week beginning August 31, forecasts from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting point to higher solar production in Spain and Italy. The outlook also indicates a decline in Germany.

Wind generation rises across major markets in late August

Wind energy production increased across all major European electricity markets during the fourth week of August compared with the previous week. Portugal recorded the strongest growth, with wind generation up by 60%, followed by Germany with a 55% increase. France and Spain rose by 27% and 23%, respectively, while Italy had the smallest gain at 4.6%. Germany, France, Portugal and Spain increased wind output for a second consecutive week.

Italy extended its positive run to a third consecutive week of growth. On August 24, Portugal reached 81 GWh of wind energy production, the highest level ever recorded for an August day. Later, on August 29, France generated 218 GWh, its highest daily wind output for August since 2023.

AleaSoft forecasts point to mixed wind outlook from August 31

For the week beginning August 31, AleaSoft forecasts indicate continued wind generation growth in Germany. In contrast, wind power output is expected to decline in France, Spain, Portugal and Italy, according to AleaSoft reports.
