Solar and Wind Energy Trends in Europe Show Divergent Patterns

In mid-March, solar photovoltaic generation saw significant increases across several major European markets, marking a shift from previous trends. Both France and Germany reported a robust growth of 35% in solar output, reversing the declines noted in the preceding week. Italy and Spain also maintained positive momentum with increases of 6.1% and 6.3%, respectively. However, Portugal faced a stark contrast, with a notable drop of 26% in its solar generation during this period.

Noteworthy achievements were recorded in both Germany and France as they set new benchmarks for solar photovoltaic production during March. On March 19, Germany reached its second-highest daily solar output for the month at 341 GWh. The following day, France broke an all-time record for March with a daily production of 141 GWh.

Looking forward to the week of March 23, forecasts from AleaSoft Energy Forecasting suggest that solar generation is anticipated to rise further in Italy and Spain. Conversely, Germany is expected to experience a downturn in its solar output.

On the wind energy front, production levels increased significantly in the Iberian Peninsula and Italy during the third week of March after previous declines. Italy led the way with an impressive surge of 113%, while Spain saw a more modest increase of 6.2%. Portugal also benefited from a rise in wind generation by 14%. In contrast, Germany and France experienced reductions in wind output, with Germany facing the largest decrease at 27%, while France’s wind production fell by 14%.

AleaSoft Energy Forecasting anticipates higher wind generation for the final week of March across the Iberian Peninsula, Italy, and Germany. However, a decrease in wind energy production is expected for France during this same timeframe.
