Between January and July, power stations delivered 6,464.4 GWh to Slovenia’s transmission network, down 10.4% year on year. In the same period, electricity withdrawals rose by 2.7% to 6,439.2 GWh. The shift in supply and demand contributed to a tighter domestic balance.
Hydropower and coal generation decline
The largest production decrease came from hydropower. Slovenian hydro plants generated 1,726.1 GWh, which was less than 72% of output in the corresponding seven months of 2025. Coal-fired generation also fell over the period.
The Sostanj thermal plant produced 796.6 GWh before its shutdown in April. That level marked a decline of more than 23% year on year. With weaker hydro and reduced coal output, the system relied more on other generation sources and cross-border supply.
Nuclear output steady through July
Nuclear generation provided the most stable major source of supply during the first seven months of 2026. The Krsko nuclear power plant generated 3,527.2 GWh through July, broadly unchanged from the previous year. Its output was affected only after the reporting period.
After July, low water levels and high temperatures in the Sava river created difficult cooling conditions for Krsko. Temporary reductions were implemented in early August as a result. This followed the January-July period in which output remained broadly steady.
Gas generation rises as demand strengthens
Gas-fired generation moved in the opposite direction to hydro and coal. Ljubljana’s TE-TOL produced 394.6 GWh, more than 78% higher year on year, supported by the first complete January-July operating period for its new combined-cycle unit.
Gas-fired Brestanica increased generation by almost one-third to 20.4 GWh. By early August, it had already exceeded its production target for the full year . Demand strengthened across principal customer groups during the same timeframe.
Withdrawals increase across customer groups
Distribution companies withdrew 5,600.7 GWh, up 2.6%, while direct consumers used 576.2 GWh, an increase of 3%. Pumped-storage demand also rose over January-July 2026.
The Avce pumped-storage hydropower plant consumed 262.4 GWh for pumping, up 4.7% compared with January-July 2025 . Weak hydropower production and lower coal generation coincided with rising domestic demand, contributing to greater reliance on imported electricity during the period.
Krsko-backed nuclear stability and higher gas-fired output partly offset declines from hydro and coal, but not enough to prevent increased dependence on cross-border supply . The reported figures cover transmission deliveries, withdrawals, and generation by major fuel types through July 2026.
