The initial phase, led by the Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Đedović Handanović, aims to scrutinize the legal framework and assess the viability of nuclear energy in meeting Serbia’s long-term energy requirements. This foundational analysis is slated for completion around mid-2027, culminating in a detailed report that will outline the technical, regulatory, and economic landscape for nuclear power in Serbia.
Following this groundwork, attention will shift to the preparatory phase, which will involve several years of assessments regarding technology options, safety protocols, and grid integration. Collaborations with international partners such as France’s EDF and the French Development Agency (AFD) are anticipated to support these evaluations. Serbia’s current energy landscape is heavily reliant on coal-fired generation from major plants like Nikola Tesla, Kolubara, and Kostolac.
