The Serbian state-owned power utility, EPS, has awarded a contract valued at approximately 690,000 euros to a consortium of three local companies for conducting geological studies at the Tamnava West Field, part of the Kolubara lignite basin. This decision, made in early February, underscores EPS’s commitment to enhancing its understanding of the coal deposits in this critical mining region.
The primary objective of the consortium’s work will be to carry out comprehensive investigations aimed at refining the interpretation of the geological structure and composition of the coal deposits. This research is expected to yield more precise assessments of coal quality characteristics, which are essential for developing effective mining strategies and ensuring coal homogenization. The findings will lay the groundwork for future mining plans and the preparation of detailed geological and mining project documentation.
Field activities associated with this study will encompass exploratory drilling, sample collection for laboratory analysis, geomechanical testing, and examination of non-metallic mineral materials found in conjunction with coal deposits. Scheduled to align with seasonal constraints, drilling operations are anticipated to occur between April and mid-November, ensuring that suitable samples can be obtained for analysis. The consortium will have up to 120 working days to fulfill its contractual obligations once officially commenced.
In a related development, the Serbian Government has taken significant steps to facilitate the expansion of mining operations within the Kolubara basin. Authorities have declared a public interest in the expropriation and administrative transfer of land necessary for further development of the mining complex. This decision pertains to land and buildings located in the cadastral area of Jabucje in the municipality of Lajkovac, with ownership of the expropriated properties set to be transferred to the Republic of Serbia for utilization by EPS.
