In a significant step towards completing its 430 MW gas-fired power plant in Iernut, Romania, Romgaz has launched a public procurement procedure for site management services. This project has encountered numerous delays since its inception nearly ten years ago, highlighting the complexities involved in large-scale energy infrastructure development.
The tender, with an estimated value of approximately 4 million euros excluding VAT, aims to oversee the final phase of construction and commissioning. Interested parties can submit their bids until March 10, 2026, with an evaluation period set to conclude by May 19 of the same year.
Initially slated for completion in 2020, the commissioning of the combined-cycle power plant has now been pushed back to December 31, 2026. The total investment in the project amounts to 269 million euros, and it is reported to be about 98% complete, with only final technical and operational stages remaining. This extension aligns with a government decision made at the end of 2025, which permits projects funded through non-reimbursable sources to reach completion by the end of 2026, while allowing reimbursement of eligible expenses until June 30, 2027.
Upon its completion, the Iernut facility is anticipated to bolster Romania’s domestic electricity generation capacity. The plant is expected to provide flexible gas-based output that will support renewable energy sources and enhance overall system stability within the national grid.
