The renewable energy landscape in Romania is set to expand significantly with the recent announcement from Greenvolt Group, a Portuguese energy developer, which has secured €348 million in financing for a new wind farm project. This facility, located in Ialomita county in southeastern Romania, will boast a capacity of 253.1 MW, marking it as one of the largest privately developed renewable energy projects currently underway in the region.

The financial backing for this ambitious project comes from a consortium of notable financial institutions, including UniCredit Bank, Erste Group Bank, Raiffeisen Bank, Societe Generale, BRD Groupe Societe Generale, and Siemens Bank. This comprehensive funding package not only supports the construction phase but also includes supplementary credit facilities designed to enhance project viability.

In a strategic move, Greenvolt has sold the wind farm to Engie Romania, with the transaction expected to be finalized once the facility reaches commercial operation in 2027. Despite this sale, Greenvolt will maintain oversight of development activities through its subsidiary, Greenvolt Power. The company will be responsible for engineering, construction, and commissioning processes until the project is operational.

The Ialomita wind farm is poised to play a crucial role in Romania’s renewable energy sector as it prepares for commercial operations in 2027. This project underscores the growing trend towards private investment in renewable energy infrastructure within the country.

Furthermore, Greenvolt is actively expanding its footprint in Romania’s energy market, with a robust pipeline that includes 555 MW of wind projects, 77 MW of solar capacity, and 156 MW of battery storage currently under development. This strategic positioning highlights the company’s commitment to contributing to Romania’s transition towards sustainable energy solutions.
