As Romania concludes a notably cold winter, the country reports substantial natural gas reserves and a stable market outlook, according to Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan. He emphasized that current supply levels are adequate to satisfy domestic demand, and the anticipated lifting of gas price caps is not expected to lead to increased consumer expenses.
Minister Ivan noted that Romania has predominantly depended on its stored gas throughout the winter months. This strategy has not only met national consumption needs but also enabled the country to export surplus volumes, contributing positively to regional trade dynamics. Early storage injections initiated last summer have ensured that reserves are sufficient to withstand varying weather conditions during the heating season.
In a significant policy shift, Romania has completely ceased imports of Russian gas over the past two years. This decision has alleviated supply pressures and allowed Romania to enhance its role in the regional gas market. The country now serves as a transit and trading hub, reselling imported gas to Moldova and facilitating transport to Ukraine. This development generates revenue for Romanian enterprises while ensuring local supply remains unaffected.
Looking forward, the government’s gas compensation scheme is set to conclude on April 1. Minister Ivan indicated that current market conditions are more favorable than in previous years, with commercial offers already falling below the previously established capped price. Consequently, the removal of this support mechanism is unlikely to elevate consumer prices, mirroring outcomes observed when electricity price caps were lifted.
Despite this optimistic outlook, the government is proactively preparing contingency measures in anticipation of potential volatility in international gas markets. Should prices surge again, reminiscent of the spikes following the onset of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, authorities may consider temporarily reinstating a gradually declining price cap for up to a year. This measure aims to protect households and businesses from abrupt price increases while avoiding long-term market distortions.
