Romania solar output hits new record near 5 GW at midday peak

Romania recorded a new high for solar power generation, with output surpassing the previous all-time peak just one day after it was reached. Data compiled by transmission system operator Transelectrica shows the latest milestone occurred on 19 June.

Midday peak generation and grid mix

At 12:33, dispatchable solar power plants generated 2,952 MW, above the prior record of 2,690 MW. Total electricity generation in Romania was around 6,020 MW, with solar becoming the largest single source in the generation mix at that time.

Electricity consumption from the grid stood at approximately 4,100 MW. Hydropower output remained below 1,000 MW, while one nuclear unit was offline during the same period.

Solar share including prosumer contribution

System data indicates that solar plants supplied around 72% of electricity consumption from the network at the peak, excluding production from prosumers. Including rooftop and small-scale installations increased solar output significantly.

Transelectrica estimates that prosumers added about 1,930 MW between 12:00 and 13:00, lifting total solar generation to close to 5,000 MW during the midday peak.

Distributed capacity and cross-border exports

Romania has more than 320,000 prosumers, with combined installed capacity exceeding 3,700 MW. The scale of distributed generation is reflected in the estimated prosumer contribution during the midday window.

Strong solar production also coincided with higher cross-border flows. Romania exported approximately 2,200 MW of electricity to neighbouring markets at the time of the record.
